St. James' Church, Alderholt

Patronal Festival 2009

'The Tree of Life' - 25th - 26th July 2009

We can report that St James' Day was well and truly celebrated. A window of gorgeous English summer sunshine amid another wall-to-wall English summer of rain. Blue skies and billowing clouds above a field of dreams and delightful eccentricity. Morris dancers and jazz, bar and barbeque and afternoon teas, wheelchairs and push chairs, school friends from 60 years ago and friends from schools just broken up for the holidays, all the old favourite stalls and some new ones dreamed up just for you: there really is no other fete quite like Alderholt's!

QWERTY MAGIC… one of the surprise hits on the bric-a-brac stall at the fete was an old type writer. It was all an intriguing mystery to a 16 year old lad of the Facebook and Ipod generation: ‘So, how do you fit the paper in? Hey, look, you get a backspacer too! And that's why we have ‘qwerty' on keyboards, so the old keys didn't clash in your average English word! Typewriters are cool!' His parents report that the long-forgotten sound of thudding typing and that return ratchet and ‘ching' are once again to be heard in an Alderholt home. So, us older ones should hang on still to our LPs and tape players and Kodaks: our time will come around again!
